Drowned In Sound, have today posted a review of Doves recent show at Nottingham’s Rock City venue.
What is apparent with Doves current live show is the way the new songs glide almost effortlessly into the set with the minimum of fuss, as if they had always been there. ‘Jetstream’ could be their epitaph if they ever were to call it a day, its five minutes of sonic escapism flitting from atmospheric Eno trajectories into anthemic krautrock at the switch of a lyric, while ‘Winter Hill’ and ‘The Outsiders’ fuse acid house reared grooves and laid back reverb drenched rhythms with a sense of muted ambivalence that becomes even more apparent during the latter’s us-against-the-world battle cry. Add to that ‘Compulsion’, which transforms the Spencer Davis Group’s ‘I’m A Man’ into a 21st Century liturgy and you can see why many of these more recent compositions are undeniable highlights of the evening.
I was going to link this Scotsman article at the the bottom of the Swindon review, but I think it deserves its own post. Its written by a fan of doves, talking about what doves have meant in him the past nine years. He saw them for the first time last weekend in Brixton. Enough of my rambling, go give it read. I’m sure many of you can relate.
Doves were one of those bands that kept me company through it all, constants in a world of change. Their music seemed somehow to chime exactly with every pattern of my life. I discovered them back in 2000 with the release of their astonishing debut album Lost Souls. (The joke was that Doves used to be called Sub Sub who were an unspectacular disco outfit who released a catchy pop song or two: worlds away from the anthemic, epic sound of Doves). Three albums later and their alchemy still works its magic. I had always wanted to see them perform live but was worried that the reality would ruin everything, that they would let me down. Because the one thing Doves have never done is let me down.
The Swindon Advertiser has reviewed doves performance at today’s Radio One’s Big Weekend:
THE Doves were given the bird after being introduced on stage by of all things, a chicken – or maybe it was dove!
For fans of Doves, this was a wonderful showcase where they played many of their favourite songs, however the audience at the In New Music We Trust stage filtered away at the end, as news reached that Kasabian were playing on the main stage.
Doves ended their set with a percussion performance which provided a lively finish.
Doves were formed after brothers Jez and Andy Williams met their long lost schoolmate Jimi Goodwin on a lost weekend in the Hacienda, and did the decent thing… they formed a band! Their brand of music was very much like Coldplay and Travis.
James Williams, 18, from Lancaster, said: “The Doves are bloomin’ awesome. I have seen them three times before and whenever I hear them live they always steal the show.”
His girlfriend, Chloe Ronson, 17, from Pinehurst, was celebrating her birthday. “This was the best birthday present I could have received.
Doves performed at BBC Radio One’s Big Weekend earlier today. The full set hasn’t yet been televised on any BBC TV channel, but it’s possible that this may occur over the next seven days.
Their performance of ‘Black And White Town’ has been broadcast by BBC3, earlier this evening. Check the schedule in our sidebar for further planned television broadcasts.
Click here to download a video of the performance.
The video is an Xvid-encoded MPEG4 AVI file which should be standalone-compatible with most new DVD or AV players which are equipped to play DivX files.
Jimi and Andy of Doves recently hosted their own show for Xfm Radio in the U.K., playing an hour of their favourite music, every Sunday during the month of April.
Due to copyright restrictions, we were unable to record, upload and share these shows.
However, after a bit of investigation, it’s become apparent that the shows are available to download directly from Xfm’s third-party servers.
Windows users should right-click the links and choose ‘Save As’.
Note that they’re not playing their own records!
To reiterate, we have not copied or distributed these shows elsewhere. These links point directly towards files which are publically accessible via Xfm’s own archives.
Electro indie trio Pop Noir will be supporting doves at the San Diego House Of Blues show on Thursday night. Wild Light will be supporting, for the rest of the US & Canada dates, as previously reported.
The band played the final date of the UK tonight in Leeds. By all accounts it was a cracking night. Some saying it was the show of the year so far.
Doves play this weekend’s Radio 1 Big Weekend in Swindon. After which, attention then turns to the North American tour, which kicks off in San Diego on Thursday.
Setlist as posted by Rosie & NLF at doves board.
