Edinburgh Edge festival

Edinburgh Review

A review in today’s Scotsman of last night’s Edinburgh show by Gary Flockhart.

TINNITUS- inducing roars of appreciation rang out around the HMV Picture House as 1500 punters welcomed their heroes on stage last night. The object of their affection, Doves, were in town to play the first big gig of this year’s Edge Festival, and the mostly 30-something crowd knew they were in for a set brimming with atmosphere and tension from beginning to end.

You don’t get a whole lot of razzmatazz at a Doves gig. The band don’t rely on hideously over-the-top stage theatrics a la Muse and U2, and their between-song patter consists of mutterings to one another – presumably – about guitar strings. But they get away with any lack of charisma because the music is so damn affecting.

Edinburgh Setlist

The show has literally just finished, setlist as always thanks to NLF. If you went, or was at last night’s show in Scarborough do let us know how it went on. Apparently people were jumping into the lagoon at the front of the stage at Scarborough? Sounds like an interesting show!

Weekend Gigs Info

Things are starting to slow down for Doves now. Not many chances left for you to catch them live before they go off on that hiatus.

On Saturday they play the beautiful Scarborough Open Air Theatre, the event is being billed as Doves Summer Music Festival. Which basically means Doves are being supported by the likes of the Futureheads, Detroit Social Club, Newton Faulkner, Kassidy & Tiffany Page. Doors open at 1pm, Doves are due on 7:30pm playing their usual full 90 minute set, according to the event website. Sounds like a good day out to me!

On Sunday Doves return to Scotland to play the Edinburgh Edge festival at the HMV Picture House. Support will be provided by The Ray Summers. Tix are still available for this one at the usual outlets.

Then finally on bank holiday Monday Doves headline the Hartlepool tall ships entertainment stage. Doves are due on stage at 10:10pm, playing until 11:30pm. Providing support are the legends Echo & The Bunnymen! Also playing are blog faves Exit Calm, who take the stage at 7pm. This is a free event!
