An interview with Jimi on 6 Music news. Jimi again talks about the Bird Effect project and his solo record. What’s new from this interview is jimi talking about his collaboration with Guy Garvey and that it would be on the solo record he is working on.
In today’s Guardian Chris Salmon explains why Lost Souls is his favourite album:
Even if you didn’t listen to a word of Lost Souls’ lyrics, you’d struggle to remain unmoved by the rivers of raw emotion flowing through it. But pay attention to the tales of tough times and broken relationships that Goodwin is spinning and your heart feels like it’s been whacked with a cricket bat wrapped in a blanket. There are the nightmares and insomnia of Sea Songs; the quiet despair of the title track; the sighing resignation of Break Me Gently (there’s a clue in that title too); and the full-tilt blubfest of Cedar Room, with its chorus howl of “I tried to sleep alone, but I couldn’t do it”. Sure, there are “blue skies ahead” in the sumptuous The Man Who Told Everything, but only because its desperate character has just sold some life-wrecking secrets and is doing a runner to the airport.
A Doves Music Blog exclusive for you, I can finally reveal what the Williams brothers have been upto! For more info check out the Williams Brothers Brewery website! ;) Thanks to Caught By The River for the tip!
On Monday Jimi was the special guest on the new Mary Anne Hobbs Xfm show Music: Response. The show is available to listen to at Xfm on demand here. The interview starts 2 hours in.
During the interview Jimi spoke at length about his work on the Bird Effect with Ceri Levy. There is to be another Bird Effect performance for Ghosts of Gone Birds, this time in Shoreditch sometime in November. More on that as I get it!
Jimi also spoke about his ‘solo’ record which he hopes will sound like some mad mix tape! He has been working with Simon Dine, who is probably most known for producing the last couple Paul Weller records.
Of Course Mary Anne Hobbs asked Jimi about the status of Doves, again Jimi reiterated they are taking a break/hiatus whatever you want to call it. Jimi compiled a rather eccentric mix for the show which you can listen to below. The mix includes some of Jimi’s demos, spot them if you can!
First off, don’t forget to tune into Xfm on Monday night at 8pm to hear Jimi on the new Mary Anne Hobbs show. Jimi had done a guest mix for the show and will be in the studio for a chat also.
It is hard to believe Echoes in the Alleyway is almost a year old! We will be marking the one year anniversary, more on that very soon!
There is talk of maybe doing another project for a 2013 release! but could do with some other peoples thoughts.
The timing of the project last year couldn’t have been better with the Doves best of out, it coincided with Doves ‘last gig for awhile’ among other things. I borrowed the idea (after it was suggested to me) from another artist website, who does this every year! Not sure how he does it, the work that goes into it is mega. You have no idea how much I appreciated the help I got from those of you who contributed to the project.
Should we do it again? If so what could be better..
what could be done different?
What didn’t you like?
Was 2CDs worth of tracks too much?
The project will be very different than the original Echoes release, but with the same objective of raising even more money for charity.
What are your thoughts? Got any suggestions? We want to hear from you, even if its just to say don’t do it again or to show your support! There is a thread on the official doves forum here. If you are not a member then you can comment on this post or email me at nicky@dovesmusicblog.com

Loren Carpenter is one of the artists who contributed to the successful Echoes in the Alleyway project we put together last year in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Loren is putting on a 3 Day Music Festival-benefiting American Cancer Society, in Susquehanna, PA USA this Labor day weekend, 20 bands over the 3 days. If you are in the area and would like to attend or even play at the benefit then visit the event facebook page for more details and contact info. Good luck with the benefit Loren, hope it goes well!
Of course Caught By The River is run by the good folks behind Heavenly Recordings. There have been some great new artists added to the label roster of late. My favourite happens to be Seattle based the head and the heart, who have just returned to the US after a sold out UK tour. If you are in North America, these guys are touring every lamppost from New York to San Diego over the coming weeks. Go see them if you can, fantastic band live.
Also really enjoying the beautiful new record from Trevor Moss and Hannah Lou. Quality First, Last & Forever! was released in June. Here is the latest video from it..
Anyhow to check out more from these artists and more (past & present!) check out Heavenly’s soundcloud.
Fancy adding your vocal to a fan cover of Pounding? If so then head over to the forum, where member Aravnik has got a project going. There are 20 lines to sing, some are taken. Check in with the forum thread to see which lines need doing!
Martin Rebelski has scored the music for the second book in the ‘Anna’ trilogy. You may recall last year Rebelski wrote the soundtrack for Anna & the Witch’s Bottle, for which the music is still available to download at itunes.
Here is the blurb on the second book:
‘Anna & The Juniper Dog’ is the second book in the ‘Anna’ trilogy and follows the acclaimed ‘Anna & the Witch’s Bottle’. Featuring Geoff Cox’s surrealist prose and Rohan Daniel Eason’s exquisite pen and ink illustrations, the book is designed by the La Boca studio and presented with an exclusive soundtrack of minimalist compositions by Martin Roman Rebelski of Doves.
Check out the music using the soundcloud tab below. For more info visit blackmaps.org
Some more news on what Jimi is currently up to. Taken from an interview posted at hitfix.com.
Do you have material you’ve written on your own that you think you may do something with outside of Elbow right now, like a solo project or side band?
I’m currently collaborating with Jimmy Goodwin from Doves
Guy Garvey also mentioned on his 6 Music show last week that he & Jimi had been working together at Real World Studios. All sounds very cool! Hope to hear more on this.
If you missed out on hearing Jimi’s Bird Effect track on 6 Music the other week. A different version, which sounds like the track intro was aired on Domino Radio last week on a show presented by the good folks at Caught By The River. The show is archived online here, well worth checking out to hear more new music from Jimi! Listen to the full show, some great music on it including Dave Rofe’s brilliant Richard Burton-King Tubby –Under Dub Wood mash up.
