4 Years On since the release.

Im not sure how folks still feel about the album. I thought I would post my thoughts on it.

I dont think I have actively listened to this album in 6 months.
For myself, despite actually liking most of the songs, including Compulsion, I find my ability to listen to the album as a whole, very seasonal. I've always felt (and still do) that the album lacked a certain cohesiveness that existed in the first 2 albums from the band. From the acoustic KOR, to the electronic Jetstream to the jumping House of Mirrors..to the Charlatans inspired Bside Ship of Fools.....its still an album that has great songs on it, but doesn't necessary make a good album from start to finish ( like LS and LB).

Most songs dont sound dated. I appreciate the song KOR more than I used to, and do think its aged well, but songs like Winter Hill and Lifelines, remind me of the early Doves and even somewhat of 90's brit-pop (actually the intro to Winter Hill still reminds me of the old board- constantly looping that intro over and over). Compulsion, still likable but I agree with most that its still an oddity on the album. With an interest in electronic music, Im not still quite sure what they were trying to accomplish by having it on the album instead of releasing it as b-side.

I would be curious to see how the band feels about the album and some songs on it.
If the band released KOR today, IMO-it wouldn't that much attention. The indie sound, while still popular, has become somewhat more sophisticated and mainstream over the years or so (Eblow doing a song for the Olympics, The Black Keys) etc. Of course, we wouldn;t want the band to sell out their sound to go "mainstream" (here's looking at you Coldplay) but I dont think I would enjoy a KOR 2.0 as much if they ever get around to another Doves release.

Still grateful that the band released the album after what felt like a long wait- and I thoroughly enjoy some songs till this day, but over all, the album still ranks as my 3rd favorite after LS and LB.
Happy Birthday KOR!
