Blackpool Empress 2004
What Happened
Doves went on a short mini tour of the UK late 2004, to try out new material from the upcoming album Some Cities. The tour would end on a Friday night at the Blackpool Empress, supported by the rather excellent I Am Kloot. Having seen the band almost 30 times now (yes I know!) this gig is up there with the best of them.
Doves treated fans who traveled far and wide with rarely heard tracks like Darker. I suspect the floor at the empress is still reverberating, after the best version of Pounding they have ever done.
New material, Opener Snowden, and Ambition especially were set highlights. The band clearly were enjoying themselves. They invited Guy Garvey of Elbow up for several songs, I don’t recall which ones now, not that it really matters. This was a mental gig that will live long in the memory.
